SPOILER ALERT!! I really enjoyed the first book in this series, The Threshold Child. I was so excited to dive into the second book! I was surprised to find it picked up 5 years after the first book left off. This was a little disappointing because it seemed like things were left in a heightened state at the end of book 1 and could've easily picked up from there, but I'll admit the author did a good job of filling in the gaps, for the most part. I'd have to say this story was a lot slower than the first book, and that's why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. It really dragged in some parts to the point where it became a little boring. However, overall, I think this was a great book. The end was pretty sudden, leaving off with the sacrifice of Adesina's life in order to save Liam, her life somehow being restored, and then BOOM, done. End of story. I'll be anxiously awaiting the arrival of Book 3!!! Let's hope it doesn't shoot forward another 5 years from where this book left off...Product details

Legacy of the Blood The Threshold Trilogy Book 2 edition by Callie Kanno Children eBooks Reviews
Though five years have passed, this book doesn't miss a beat! The action is just as intense, the story line is believable and well paced without the 'holy cow, will they ever stop being attacked?' feeling. The characters remain true to the first series while showing more age and maturity while the new characters are just interesting enough to make you want to know more about them. A more than worthy second book in the series!
This was a really good book and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I thought it started a little slow (even though it literally starts with a kidnapping) & it took awhile to grab my attention but once it did, it was hard to do anything else!
I liked that she developed as a character throughout the book, facing her fears head on and solving them, instead of pushing away her problems until they implode.
Very eagerly moving to the next/last book in the series!
There are so many passages that are very important. The thoughts and feelings that are shown makes you want to note them on a separate paper, but you would almost need to rewrite the book. I couldn’t stop reading waiting for the next important part. I hope book 3 is as great.
I don't like reading reviews that tell me the story (and worse the ending)--See the book jacket. As with Book 1, new characters are introduced and well developed. Old characters grow and deepen. Amazing treats are in store. Heroine makes new friends through her journey. When she leaves one group she misses them. I missed them too. Tells you Kanno did a great job building them. Ebb and flow of suspense and arcs are like a joy ride. There may be a few too many ups and downs for some. I can't wait for Book #3!
Starting a series is a gamble. The first book is great but you can't be sure about the next one. Trust me, you won't be sorry you started this series. Well written with twists and turns and characters you learn to love and some to mourn. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys getting wrapped up in new worlds and characters. A great read and boy was I crushed when I read the last page and realized I would have to wait to see what happens next.
This is a very enjoyable book and a great follow-up to the first story in the series. Adesina is fabulous and continues to grow but also experience many trials. Ravi is fast becoming a favorite character of mine. I cannot wait to see what the author does in the next book of the series, especially with the ending (I promise it is a good ending) of this book.
My one issue was that the historical parts of the story seemed to drag on a bit. I realize these parts are important but a bit few pages less would have been a good thing for me personally.
I am looking forward to book three in the series.
When I saw the description, the 5 year jump had me apprehensive. Would the story's character and theme change too drastically? Would Adesina the adult and queen be perhaps unrecognizable? (Also, it feels a bit spoilerific as the first sentence in the description, and I don't think 's good at prioritizing first books of series when browsing recommendations.)
But I really liked the first novel, and I had to continue. I was not disappointed (for the most part, see below).
Like the first, this is another grand YA adventure. But rather than a coming of age story, it is more a story of longing and acceptance. Actually, that's not quite right - both books share these themes. In the first book, Adesina finally accepts her role as the Threshold Child and future queen. In this book, despite becoming an adult with 5 years of experience leading her people, she is still that young girl learning her way in her world and spirit, just in a more introspective way. So it's not quite the sudden change in genre that I feared.
Legacy of the Blood follows Adesina chasing after her beloved captured husband, encountering new lands, meeting people new and familiar (and complicated - Kendan), and the emotional turmoil and past that clings her. Emphasis on that last part - it's a story of Adesina's acceptance and resolution of her torments. Speaking of "Adesina", it's telling that she still prefers her Shimat name (or maybe I'm reading into that too much). A good portion of the book is devoted to Adesina's Dreaming and the histories they reveal. At times, it almost bogs down the story, but it's the story's pacing and the history's necessity that saves it.
The writing features the same satisfying spiritual and emotional appeal of Threshold Child. Even when I could predict what would happen next, I was still captured by the narrative. That's not to say that the tale was overly predictable - there are plenty of twists and turns sprinkled throughout. The adventure and action and character building aspects of the story also remains strong. Even though you'll see common tropes, the circumstances surrounding them are quite believable and interesting enough. Adesina's "power level" feels just right - not overpowered, yet with enjoyable scenes of her abilities surprising the people she encounters. The author has great world-building aptitude - I really appreciate the attention to detail, like the language accents and evolving histories (Lahvan vs L'afan) and the nature of magic.
The Threshold series reminds me a lot of the Muirwood series - they share many of the same themes and inspired the same feelings, so if you enjoyed that series (and I did), you would enjoy this one (even more so, if the blatant biblical theme of Muirwood bothered you).
So that's the praise, now the criticism.
First and most importantly, that damn CLIFFHANGER. I know it's common for the second books of trilogies, but it still urks me the same. In fact, if I knew this would happen, I'd be tempted to hold of reading this until the 3rd book comes out.
Second, I think the prologue was ill-spent. In my opinion, sequels don't need an actiony hook - the reader should already be interested. Instead I'd prefer a bridging between Threshold Child and this book, to both refresh the reader's memory (instead of rereading the first book's glossary) and to provide something that happened within those 5 years. Perhaps a scene of Adesina's marriage to L'iam, which could have been the anchor of Adesina's driving motivation throughout the book.
Third, there were some typos (that wouldn't be caught by spellcheck) that hampered my reading a bit. Not too many, and understandable for a self-published title (which I think this is), but still annoying.
Overall, it's a great second book of the Threshold trilogy. If not for the cliffhanger, I'd rate this higher than Threshold Child. I'll definitely be picking up the final book when it arrives!
